Which Massage Is Right for You? A Guide to Our Massage Services

by prestoteam | October 21, 2026 | Massage Tips

Walk into any massage studio and the menu can feel like a foreign language. Swedish, deep tissue, neuromuscular, hot stone, lymphatic… which one is actually right for you? At Massage 119 and Wellness in Alabaster, our licensed therapists build every session around what your body needs, but it still helps to know your options before you book.

Here's a plain-English guide to each massage we offer, who it's best for, and what to expect.

1. Relaxation (Customized) Massage

Best for: everyday stress, poor sleep, and anyone who just needs an hour to put the week down.

This is the massage most people picture: long, flowing strokes with steady, comfortable pressure that calms your nervous system and loosens general tension. It's also our most flexible session. Tell your therapist your goals and they'll adjust the pressure and technique on the spot, lighter in one area and deeper in another.

2. Deep Tissue & Neuromuscular Massage

Best for: chronic pain, stubborn knots, desk-job shoulders, and athletes.

If you've been carrying tension in your neck or lower back for months, this is where to start. Deep tissue works slowly through the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, while neuromuscular techniques target specific trigger points that refer pain to other areas. The goal isn't just to feel good for a day. It's to help you move better and hurt less over time.

Tip: "Deep" doesn't mean "painful." Your therapist checks in throughout, and you can always ask for less pressure.

3. Hot Stone Massage

Best for: people who run cold, carry tight muscles, or want the most melt-into-the-table experience.

Warm, smooth stones are placed on key areas and used as an extension of your therapist's hands. The heat relaxes muscles faster, so your therapist can work deeper tension without heavy pressure. Many clients say it's the most relaxing hour of their month.

4. Prenatal Massage

Best for: expecting moms dealing with lower back pain, hip pain, swelling, or trouble sleeping.

Pregnancy changes everything about how your body carries weight. Our prenatal massage uses safe positioning and support so you can lie comfortably without lying on your belly, while your therapist focuses on the areas working hardest for you. Many providers suggest waiting until the second trimester, so check with your doctor first and let us know how far along you are when you book.

5. Couples Massage

Best for: date nights, anniversaries, birthdays, or a day out with your best friend or mom.

Two people, one room, two therapists. You each get a session tailored to you, so one of you can go deep while the other keeps it light. It's a simple way to spend time together that you'll both actually enjoy.

Recovery Add-Ons Worth Knowing About

  • Assisted Stretching: A therapist guides you through stretches you can't do on your own, helping you move easier and hurt less. It pairs well with deep tissue work.
  • Lymphatic Drainage: Gentle, rhythmic work that helps ease swelling and supports recovery, including after surgery.

How Often Should You Get a Massage?

It depends on your goals. For everyday stress and upkeep, once a month is a common rhythm. If you're working through pain or a specific issue, many people start weekly or every couple of weeks, then space visits out as things improve.

What to Expect on Your First Visit

Arrive a few minutes early. You'll talk through your goals and any sore spots with your therapist, then relax while they handle the rest. You undress to your comfort level and stay covered by a sheet the whole time, with only the area being worked on uncovered. Drink some water afterward, and you're on your way.

We're proud to serve Alabaster, Pelham, Helena, Calera, Montevallo, Hoover, and the rest of south Birmingham. Whatever brings you in, we'll build your session around you.
